Armor-Plate Production Proves Lucrative for AZ Firm

LAI International, Inc., Scottsdale, AZ, a supplier to Boeing, Eaton, GE, Lockheed Martin and other Fortune 500 manufacturers, has won several contracts for manufacturing armor-plate assemblies. As part of its recent agreements, LAI received five awards for production of military-vehicle armor plating developed by the Army Research Lab, designed to stop penetrating-type explosives. LAI supplies precision components and subassemblies using processes such as hot forming, CNC machining, chemical milling and five-axis precision waterjet drilling. Double-Sheet Detector Protects
Expanded-Metal Press Line

Niles Expanded Metals, Niles, OH, has installed a Model 120 double-sheet detector, from Roland Industrial Electronics, Cleveland, OH, on an automatic production press used to produce expanded-metal materials. The control unit of the double-sheet detector can store as many as 255 programs, making it well-suited to the large variety of materials processed at Niles, including several grades of carbon steels, as well as magnetic and nonmagnetic stainless steels, aluminum and titanium alloys and various exotic alloys. The spring-manufacturing business of GR Spring & Stamping Inc., Grand Rapids, MI, has entered into a joint venture with Stumpp, Schuele, & Somappa (SSS) USA Inc., and MultiTech Industries, Inc., Carol Stream, IL. SSS USA Inc., a subsidiary of Stumpp, Schuele & Somappa Pvt.
