Metlab Gains $500,000 Grant
for Tool and Die Coating Process

An advanced coating process that promises to extend the life of metalworking tools by up to 10 times will be available from Metlab, a Philadelphia commercial heat-treating company, under a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The grant is through a federal program aimed at enabling companies to commercialize new processes that save energy. The new process will deposit coatings of vanadium carbide on stamping and forming tools, draw dies and other tools. It can treat parts up to 18-in. diameter and weighing up to 1500 lb. It employs thermal-diffusion technology to apply a coating 15 microns thick, with a surface hardness to 3800 HVN. Metlab is online at

GE Power Systems Acquires Panametrics

Panametrics Inc., Waltham, MA, supplier of ultrasonic-testing equipment and process-control instrumentation, is now known as GE Panametrics, as a result of a GE Power Systems acquisition. Panametrics owns nearly 100 patents in moisture analyzers, digital flaw detection and hand-held digital data-logging thickness gauges.

Jenks Metals Acquires Orlando Operation

Jenks Metals LLC has purchased the assets of the Metals USA Specialty Metals operation in Orlando, FL. The new operation will supply carbon and alloy steels, aluminum and stainless-steel alloys and brass plate, sheet, bar, extrusions, pipe and tubing to customers in the southeastern United States.
