Robots Moving into U.S. Factories in a Big

Nearly 200,000 robots are now at work in U.S. factories, according to the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), Ann Arbor, MI. RIA’s current market study shows that robot orders by North American factories jumped by 40 percent through the first half of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. When orders to companies outside of North America are included, the increase climbs to 54 percent. The biggest gains came in orders by nonautomotive companies (up 51 percent), while automotive orders grew by grew by 30 percent. In terms of applications, arc welding showed the biggest gain for new robots, up 52 percent,, followed closely by material handling (up 51 percent). More at

Drop 4 Percent in July

According to steel-industry consulting firm MEPS Intl., flat-product transaction values in the United States continued to decline in July as mills, desperate for orders, make price concessions for their larger customers. Specifically, the U.S. market for coil is weak, and transaction prices have declined by more than five percent over the past four weeks, says the company. For cold-rolled coil, the traditional summer slowdown “has resulted in numerous holes developing in the mills’ order books across North America,” report MEPS. “Discounts are available to anyone with a substantial order to place.” Read the full report.
