California Metalformer Adds Facilities in Mexico

Walker Corporation, Ontario, CA, acquired Specialty International de Mexico, in Monclova, and purchased the equipment and leased the facilities formerly occupied by Monterrey Metal Products in Apodaca, Monterrey. Both locations will operate as Walker Specialty International de Mexico, a division of Walker Corporation. The firm provides high-volume progressive-die stamping, mid-range stamping, automated welding and assembly, metal fabrication and coating services; www.walkercorp.com.

Chicago Stamper Relocates to Larger Wheeling Facility

Wood Brothers Steel Stamping has relocated from Chicago to a recently acquired 30,300-sq.-ft. facility in Wheeling, IL, taking advantage of improved shipping and receiving capabilities and Cook County’s tax-reduction program. The new location is a clear-span building with a 25-ft.-high ceiling, two truck docks, four drive-in doors and parking for 15 vehicles, and is expandable to 45,000 sq. ft.

Steel Shipments Tick Up as Inventory Levels Dwindle

Nucor Corp. reports that steel orders appeared to have bottomed out in April, as May shipments were up 21 percent over April’s, June’s orders were up 8 percent over May, the trend continued into July, according to a recent article in the Charlotte Business Journal. The uptick, cautions Nucor management, appears to be due only to dwindling inventories at service centers and consuming companies—steel inventories are estimated to be at their lowest level since 1983.
