Coil and Strip Producer Banks on New ERP System

Stripco Inc., Mishawaka, IN, a manufacturer of production-ready steel coils and strips, recently went in search of software to help it gain real-time scheduling information and complete cost-of-sales information, in order to continue to efficiently serve its customers in the automotive, furniture and other steel-consuming industries. Its primary goals: improve in the areas of costing, production scheduling and tracking, and steel-industry-specific quality and certification. To accomplish those goals, it recently implemented Axiom ERP enterprise-resource-planning software from Axis, Boston, MA. As a result, Stripco general manager Eric Hiler says that the firm now responds significantly faster to customer inquiries regarding order status, and with access to real-time information on quality, holds, shipping and billing, it can “identify and act on statistically relevant information, rather than just acting on a whim.” Stripco (www.stripco.com) supplies hot- and cold-rolled and galvanized steel products 0.018 to 0.312 in. thick, in widths from 0.375 to 26 in., including slit coil, edge-conditioned coil, cut-to-length strip and oscillate-wound coil. Esab Expands Weld Filler-Metal Manufacturing Capacity

Esab Welding & Cutting Products, Hanover, PA, has added a new flux plant to its filler-metal manufacturing facility in Hanover. The second flux plant, opened in June 2008, allows the firm to produce many of its bonded subarc fluxes in North America, supplementing domestic demand with products manufactured in other Esab factories around the world. Steelmakers Unite to Support New Marketing Initiative

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), Washington, DC, has established the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), with the mission “to advance the competitive use of steel through a market-driven strategy that promotes cost effective steel-based solutions.” SMDI will operate as an AISI business unit funded by eight steel steel-producing companies. U.S. Steel’s J. James Kutka, Jr., senior vice president—strategic planning and business development, heads the new SMDI board; AISI senior vice president David C. Jeanes is SMDI president.
