Based on Commerce Dept. data, the American Iron and Steel Institute reports that steel import permit applications climbed by 15 percent in July compared to June, and that import permit tonnage for finished steel in July was up 14 percent. Annualized figures for total and finished steel permit applications are up 48 and 32 percent, respectively, compared to 2009. More at www.steel.org.

Steel-service center Norfolk Iron and Metal has commissioned a new temper mill cut-to-length line at its facility in Norfolk, NE. The line, designed and built by DBI Manufacturing, Irving, TX, processes coils to 96 in. wide of steel to 0.787 in. thick and to 100-KSI yield strength. It includes a four-high temper mill, two levelers, a six-roll brush cleaning system and a rotary shear.
