Press-Brake Manipulator System
Devised for Heavy Plate

Serapid, Inc., Sterling Heights, MI, provided a dual LinearBeam push-pull positioning system to Pacific Press Technologies, Mt. Carmel, IL, for manipulating heavy plate in press-brake forming operations. The system moves plate weighing as much as 5000 lb. It travels at 15 ft./min. and cycles once every 10 min. It replaced manual positioning, an operation requiring two operators, cutting manual labor in half and increasing productivity by four times. The Serapid LinearBeam is a mechanical actuator used for load transfer and is rated to 400-ton capacity; www.serapid.com.

Welding-Equipment Manufacturer Fronius
to Open U.S. HQ in Indiana

Austrian-based Fronius International GmbH, a manufacturer of arc-welding equipment, battery-charging systems and solar electronics, announced plans to launch a new U.S. headquarters in Portage, IN, in the third quarter of 2012. The company will move from its current location in Brighton Township, MI, to a new 400,000-sq.-ft. facility, and expects to employ as many as 512 people by 2016. More at www.fronius.com.


Carpenter to Acquire Latrobe Specialty Metals

Carpenter Technology, Wyomissing, PA, a producer of conventional and powder-metal specialty alloys, including stainless and tool steels, announced plans to acquire Latrobe Specialty Metals, Inc., Latrobe, PA, a manufacturer of high-performance materials for the aerospace, defense and energy industries. Latrobe manufactures its products—cold- and hot-work tool steels, high-speed steels and more—at facilities in PA, OH, TX and the UK, and operates seven U.S. distribution centers; www.latrobesteel.com.
