Contract Manufacturing to Blossom
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
Business among U.S. contract manufacturers is expected to increase during the next 12 months, according to a survey of Design-2-Part (D2P) Show attendees. When asked about the needs of OEMs to outsource custom parts and services over the next year, more than 2000 responders indicated that nearly three times as many OEMs expect an increase in outsourcing/purchasing projects as do those who expect a decrease. Nearly one third (31.1 percent) expect an increase, while only 11.1 percent anticipate a decrease,
The survey also reveals that offshoring may not be as popular as it once was. When asked where they currently outsource the majority of projects, only 9.8 percent of respondents said “overseas.” Outsourcing locally was the leading choice (32 percent), followed by regionally and nationally at 29 percent each. And, the leading reason why OEMs use local vendors was “hands-on access/vendor visits,” which outpolled “delivery time/cost” and “support the local economy.”

Volkswagen announced plans to invest another $1 billion over the next three years in its Puebla manufacturing complex. Included is the purchase of two Dieffenbacher tryout presses (16,000 and 25,000 kN models) for its tool-making department. The lower-tonnage model will include a 4000-kN four-point drawing cushion and a 3200-kN ram cushion. And, the bigger press will allow the plant to simulate mechanical production presses when trying out body dies. More at www.dieffenbacher.de/en
