AMT Opens Technology Center in Shanghai

AMT—The Association For Manufacturing Technology, McLean, VA, has opened a USA/Technology and Service Center in Shanghai, China. Located in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, the center offers AMT members space for machine demonstrations, training facilities, spare-parts storage and service capabilities.
AMT operates three Representative offices in China--in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou--to help U.S. suppliers of manufacturing technology provide products and services within China. Learn more at

Machine-Tool Consumption Rises 10 percent in May

According to the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association and AMT—The Association For Manufacturing Technology, U.S. machine-tool consumption in May totaled $224.30 million, up 10 percent from April and up 54.2 percent from May 2003 figures. Year-to-date machine-tool sales are up 46.1 percent over 2003 sales. Regionally, year-to-date sales compared to 2003 are up 52.2 percent in the Midwest, up 53.7 percent in the Central region, up 68.5 percent in the Northeast region and up a whopping 71.2 percent in the Western region. Southern-region sales year-to-date are nearly flat from 2003.
