Canadian Automakers Trim Production

Weak U.S. sales has forced automakers in Canada to trim production, with more cuts possible over the summer, according to analysts interviewed by The Canadian Press. Production cuts, say the analysts, may very well lead to layoffs at Canadian assembly and parts plants. Ford and General Motors already have announced lower production for the third quarter—down 15 percent and 6 percent, respectively--while DaimlerChrysler is looking at a second-quarter U.S. operating loss, which may lead to production cuts at its Canadian plants.

Mechanical Finishing Gains ISO Registration

Mechanical Finishing, Inc., Cincinnati, OH, a provider of tumbling, vibratory and tub finishing, parts cleaning and blast finishing services, received its registration to ISO 9001-2000. It serves first- and second-tier suppliers to the automotive, high-tech, appliance, tool, medical and food-service industries, with the capacity to process more than 125,000 lbs. of material per shift.

New Air-Press Builder on the Scene

Donald R. Koenig, former vice president of pneumatic-press builder Airam, Inc., has opened Koenair Precision Air Presses, Inc., Aiken, SC. The firm will manufacture four-post air-actuated presses rated 3 to 210 tons, and turnkey systems for rollforming. The firm also expects to sell tooling and spare parts for older four-post pneumatic presses.
