More Details on New
Center for Manufacturing Excellence at Ole Miss

At a press conference held earlier this week, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour announced more details about the new Center for Manufacturing Excellence planned for the University of Mississippi. The $22 million center, funded in 2007 as part of a package developed to help lure Toyota to build its new plant in Mississippi, will teach principles of lean manufacturing, total quality management and just-in-time inventory delivery. Four bachelor’s degree programs will be offered--two business-related and two engineering-related—all with a manufacturing emphasis.


Design/Simulation-Software Provider Opens Asian Office

Forming Technologies Inc. (FTI), Oakville, Ontario, Canada, has opened Forming Technologies Asia Ltd., in Hong Kong. The firm says that software revenues have grown two-fold over the past year in the Chinese market, with clients such as Ford, Johnson Controls, Dongfeng Motors and the Magna companies now using its products. FTI develops software for the design, simulation and costing of sheetmetal components; www.forming.com.

A Pair of Six-Press Automated Stamping Lines
Headed to Chinese Automotive OEM

The Schuler Group, Goeppingen, Germany (represented in North America by Schuler Inc., Canton, MI) will supply two fully automated press lines to FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company in China, a joint venture between First Automotive Works, Volkswagen and Audi. Each line will comprise six mechanical presses with a total force of 9100 tons, and speedbar press-to-press transfer technology that will enable production rates as high as 13 large panels per minute. Schuler also will supply a pair of hydraulic tryout presses to the plant, located in Changchun.
