Steel, Aluminum Shipments Up, Inventory Levels Down

According to the most recent MSCI (Metals Service Center Institute) Metals Activity Report, shipments of steel and aluminum products by U.S. and Canadian service centers rose sharply in year-to-year comparisons during May. Inventory levels of both metal alloys declined. In the United States, May shipments of steel products from service centers ticked up 15.5 percent compared to May 2005; year-to-date shipments are 5.6 percent ahead of 2005 pace. Steel-product inventories are down 7.8 percent from a year ago. May aluminum-product shipments were up 10.7 percent from May 2005, year-to-date shipments are up 6.7 percent, and inventories are down 6.2 percent from a year ago.
