Delphi, Visteon to Send More Work
to UAW-Represented Plants

As part of the new seven-year supplemental agreements announced last week between auto-parts producers Delphi Corp. and Visteon Corp. with the United Auto Workers (UAW), both firms pledged to send more work to UAW-represented plants. They also agreed to not close any of their plants until 2011, without the permission of the UAW According to an AP report on the new agreements, the UAW agreed to a new second-tier wage for new hires at the two firms. In Delphi’s case, new hires will be paid $14/hr. and pay scales, in three wage groupings, will rise to as much as $18.50/hr. over the life of the agreement. This compared to an average wage of $24/hr. for current UAW workers at Delphi and Visteon. In addition to agreeing to allocate more work to UAW-represented facilities, Delphi and Visteon also agreed to make capital investments in their UAW-represented plants to improve product quality and competitiveness.

Bootz Industries Installs Blanking Line

Red Bud Industries, Red Bud, IL, has installed a blanking line at Bootz Industries, Evansville, IL, a manufacturer of metal bathtubs and sinks. Production requires flat, square blanks, and the new 72-in. 16-gauge line, featuring Red Bud’s motorized grip-feed system, can produce these blanks with a repeatable length tolerance of +/-0.005 in. Ensuring consistent squareness is the feed’s alignment system and pivoting shear.

Porth Takes Over Production
of J.A. Richards Bending Equipment

Porth Products, Paw Paw, MI, will be producing spare parts and equipment formerly provided by J.A. Richards Co., Kalamazoo, MI, which has gone out of business. Porth Products will be producing—at its own Lawton, MI, facility--hand-operated rotary and ram benders as well as many electric and rotary power benders that had been supplied by J.A. Richards. These products will be incorporated into the AcroBend line of benders, rod partners and bending tools, described at Karl Proth, president of Porth Products, was national sales manager for J.A. Richards from 1984 to 1992.
