Tube Shipments Improve in March

March shipments of mechanical tube increased 9-11 percent over February levels and increased 7-9 percent over March 2001 levels, according to data from the Steel Tube Institute of North America. But, cautions the institute, a raw material shortage and rapid price increases are causing much volatility in the marketplace. Shipments of hollow structural sections increased 7-9 percent over February and increased 5-7 percent compared to March 2001. Stainless-tube shipments posted 5-7-percent gains over February and March 2001 levels while standard pipe-shipments rose 5-7 percent in March but showed a 6-10-percent decrease as compared to March 2001.
Roll-Kraft/Ardcor Welcomes Ohio Governor

Robert Taft, governor of Ohio, recently paid a visit to Roll-Kraft/Ardcor, Mentor, OH, to discuss industry issues and to tour the producer of tube-and-pipe-mill rolls and related rollforming equipment. Taft met with engineers, manufacturing personnel and management, discussing tax incentives, health care, worker’s compensation and other company and employee concerns. He also viewed a variety o sample products produced on Roll-Kraft tooling and equipment, and learned how manufacturing affects a broad range of industries.
Fagor Arrasate Installs Tandem Line in France

Fagor Arrasate, Gipuzkoa, Spain, has completed turnkey installation of a tandem-press line at Citroen in Poissy, France. The line features a 1400-metric-ton link-drive press with a 300-metric-ton computerized cushion backed by four 630-metric-ton presses. The line will produce steel and aluminum parts and can handle high-strength steel as well as galvanized, precoated and other specialized materials. The lead press, with bolster dimensions of 120 by 79 in., offers a working speed of 30 strokes/min. The presses feature quick-die-change capability, moving bolsters and automatic shut-height adjustment. Other automatic functions include counterbalance adjustment, slide locking and lubrication.
