NIMS Apprenticeships Approved by U.S. Dept. of Labor

Friday, May 19, 2006
Work continues on the development of a National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) competency-based apprenticeship system for the nation’s metalworking and metalforming industries. This work, funded by a U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) grant, aims to improve the skilled workers are trained in American manufacturing. In this system, the apprentice must demonstrate proficiency against a national set of core competencies; an individual company may add additional competency requirements. It integrates standards-based credentialing assessments with traditional on-the-job learning. Eleven PMA member companies are serving as pilot sites, and PMA Educational Foundation has been involved in the development of the apprenticeships related to metalforming and in the preparation of curriculum guides. The DoL has approved five occupations under the NIMS National Guideline Standard for Competency-based Apprenticeship: Machinist; Machine Builder; CNC Setup-Programmer-Milling; CNC Setup-Programmer-Turning; and CNC Setup-Programmer-Milling and Turning. This federal approval means that companies can now register apprenticeship programs for these occupations with the DoL as competency-based programs. Workers completing these apprenticeships will receive national certifications in their respective fields. NIMS has submitted to DoL for approval the competency requirements for Press Setup Operator-Stamping, and is developing for submission later this year Tool and Die Maker – Stamping; and Machine Tool Maintenance, Service and Repair.
