Robot Sales Tick Upward

The North American robotics industry showed signs of stabilizing in the first quarter of 2002, according to data from the Robotic Industries Association, Ann Arbor, MI. Through March, North American customers ordered 2350 robots, a 1-percent increase over first-quarter 2001 orders. Weakness in overseas sales by North American robotics companies, however, led to an overall 2-percent decline in new orders for the quarter. Japan to Retaliate Over Steel Tariffs

Japan plans to notify the World Trade Organization today (Friday, May 17) of its plans to retaliate against U.S. steel tariffs. The Japanese trade ministry announced on Thursday plans to impose 100-percent tariffs on nearly $5 million worth of U.S. steel and steel products, beginning on June 18.
