Hayes Lemmerz to Close a Plant

Automotive supplier Hayes Lemmerz Intl. Inc., Northville, MI, announced plans to close its plant in Howell Township, MI, according to an AP report. The plant, slated to close in June, employs 180. It makes aluminum wheels for domestic customers.

TRC Industries, Inc., Wilmerding (Pittsburgh), PA, has purchased a 72-in. coil-slitting line from Braner USA, Inc., Schiller Park, IL. The line includes a quick-change turret head, strobe-lamp surface-inspection setup, a six-high shape-correction roller leveler, non-marking strip-tensioning equipment, PVC film laminator and paper interleaver and a complete slit-coil packaging system for packaging slit coils 1- to 24-in. wide and weighing to 10,000 lb. The Price for Japanese Steel to Rise

According to a story last week from the Agence France Presse, Japanese steelmakers expect to raise prices of sheet steel by five to 10 percent in April, due to rising prices—as much as 20 to 30 percent--for iron and coal. The country’s largest steelmaker, Nippon Steel, and other suppliers are negotiating with major customers including carmakers and shipbuilders.
