Steel Imports Rise Notably in March

Latest data from the Census Bureau, as reported by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), show a 25-percent increase of U.S. steel imports in March compared to February, and a 28-percent increase in imports of finished steel. March imports (1.97 million net tons) reached their highest monthly total since January 2009. By category (March compared to February): plate in coils, up 67 percent; hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip, up 53 percent; cut-to-length plate, up 51 percent; hot-rolled sheet, up 16.4 percent; cold-rolled sheet, up 1.6 percent. An annualized comparison of finished imports shows 2010 at 15 percent ahead of 2009 totals. Japan and South Korea lead the in importing steel into the United States, followed (not so closely) by Germany and China. More information at
