Metalforming Technologies Expands in Mexico

Metalforming Technologies, Inc., Auburn Hills, MI, is opening a 90,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico, to produce products for the company’s Engineered Systems, Safety Systems and Structural & Tubular Systems business units. An increase in demand from domestic customers as well as OEM and Tier One customers with operations in Mexico led to the decision to open a Mexico facility, according to Joseph Ponteri, Metalforming Technologies, president and CEO. Programs slated for initial production in Monterrey, beginning in September 2004, include brake-booster housings, hinge assemblies and safety-related components.

Pro-Eco Becomes SMS Demag Ltd.

Pro-Eco Ltd., a seller of coil-processing lines, has changed its name to SMS Demag Ltd. The company had been purchased in September 2000 but continued to operate under its own name while working closely with the Strip Processing Lines division of SMS Demag AG. The change to SMS Demag Ltd., effective as of this past March, became necessary for worldwide consistency and marketing presentation. However, the Pro-Eco logo will be retained and will appear beside the SMS Demag logo on company documents, and Pro-Eco will remain as a brand name for push-pull pickling lines, slitting, cut-to-length, blanking and tension-leveling lines.

ATR-Strothmann Installs
Machine-Vision System at Magna

A new Canadian facility owned by Magna International has installed an Inspection.IQ machine-vision system from ATR-Strothmann, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. The new facility manufactures truck frames and chassis. Inspection.IQ verifies the presence of more than 100 studs and holes on each truck frame, ensuring that only defect-free components leave the plant. The noncontact system is located at its own station at the end of an automated welding line, employing more than 50 machine vision cameras and 80 light sources. It is expandable, with the ability to add cameras and lights, and logs each truck-frame inspection into a database to create an inspection history.
