Service-Center Inventories Fall
Tuesday, April 25, 2006
The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI), Rolling Meadows, IL, reports that inventories of steel and aluminum products at U.S. and Canadian metals service centers fell in March, as U.S. shipments of both materials continued a long-term rise and as Canadian aluminum shipments rose at a double-digit rate. March steel shipments by U.S. service centers ticked up 5.9 percent from March 2005, and represented the 8th consecutive month of rising year-over-year shipments. For the first quarter, shipments were up 4.4 percent, a trend that left steel-product inventories at 13.5 million tons at the end of March, down 13.6 percent from March 2005 levels. At the current shipping rate, according to MSCI, the available inventory represents a 2.5-month supply, down 18.4 percent from last year and 13.2 percent from February 2006 levels. March aluminum shipments climbed 6.1 percent from last March and were up for the quarter by 6.9 percent; aluminum inventory levels dropped 5.7 percent from a year ago.
In Canada, steel-product inventories at the end of March totaled 1.05 million tons, down 21.8 percent from March 2005 and representing a 2.8-month supply, a decrease of 20.3 percent from last year. Aluminum shipments were up 6.6 percent for the quarter and inventory levels were off 5.3 percent.
