Steel Shipments Decline in February

The American Iron and Steel Institute reported late last week its February 2010 shipping statistics, revealing a 4.1 percent decrease in net tons shipped compared to January 2010. However, February shipments (6.3 million net tons) were up 46.1 percent over year-earlier levels. More at

U.S. Manufacturing Technology Consumption on the Rise

According to AMT—The Association for Manufacturing Technology and AMTDA (the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association), manufacturing-technology orders in February 2010 jumped nearly 29 percent compared to January and 22 percent compared to February 2009; year to date consumption is up 22 percent compared with 2009. “The increase could be twice as large if banks would ease credit restrictions,” says AMT president Douglas K. Woods. Year to date, the U.S. regions enjoying the greatest uptick in technology consumption: the Central Region (up 43 percent over 2009) and Western Region (up 39 percent).
