Ford Exploring Al Frames for SUVs

Ford Motor Co., according to reports, has conducted feasibility reports showing that using aluminum frames, as opposed to steel, will dramatically reduce sport-utility-vehicle weight and improve fuel economy. The studies show that such frames can cut weight by 40 percent without sacrificing ride and handling. Despite the weight loss, such frames can still hold up in crashes, claim the studies.

Strippit/LVD, Akron, NY, has named Active Machinery Sales, Ltd., Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, as its marketing representative responsible for all product sales in British Columbia. Active will represent the complete Strippit/LVD line of equipment including mechanical and hydraulic CNC turret punch presses, laser-cutting systems, hydraulic press brakes, guillotine shears, fabricating systems and CAD/CAM programming software.

North American Robot Orders
Up Six Percent in ‘02

North American manufacturing companies ordered 10,573 robots, valued at $811 million, from North American-based robot suppliers in 2002. Those numbers, from the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), represent an increase of six percent in units and five percent in revenue as compared to 2001. RIA estimates that 126,000 robots now find use in the United States, making the country second only to Japan in robot use. For more, visit
