Noting a 40-percent increase in output compared with its conventional eccentric presses, German metalformer Saxonia-Franke has been so pleased with the performance of its first Schuler servo direct-drive mechanical press—installed early in 2007—that is has ordered a second identical press, to be installed later this year. The company makes components for the automotive, electrical and construction industries. The Schuler presses are 400-ton models with a bed size of 3.05 by 1.4 meters. Arizona Fabricator Earns
Military-Vehicle Armor-Kit Contract

LAI International, Inc., Scottsdale, AZ, has signed a manufacturing contract to produce armor kits for mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) military vehicles. LAI will produce the armor kits at its manufacturing facility in Westminster, MD, for its customer, Navistar Defense LLC, which received a contract from the Pentagon for 4475 of its 21-ft.-long MaxxPro MRAP vehicles. LAI will shop the kits to the Navistar assembly plant in West Point, MS. LAI operates five U.S. manufacturing plants, all ISO 9001:2000 and AS9100 certified, and offers precision laser processing, waterjet cutting, five-axis machining and other services. New Management Software for Automotive Springmaker

NHK Spring Precision of America, Inc. (NSPA ), Louisville, KY, has deployed the Plexus Online on-demand integrated manufacturing software package from Plexus Systems, Auburn Hills, MI. The Plexus software features these functions: enterprise-resource management, accounting and finance; customer-relationship-management features such as order entry and tracking; manufacturing-execution-system functions such as production scheduling; and supply-chain management functions such as supplier quality and traceability. NSPA, which produces springs for engine valves and automatic transmissions, worked with consultants from Plante & Moran to identify Plexus as the ideal hosted solution for its needs.
