Wins Auto-Supplier Innovation Award

AutoForm Engineering, with U.S. Offices in Troy, MI, has won the Automotive News PACE Award, which recognizes auto-supplier innovation in products and processes. AutoForm won for its DieDesigner software for stamping-tool design and tool development. According to AutoForm officials, judges noted the software’s ability to rapidly test alternate die designs and its high design quality.

Industrial Laser Shipments Stay Level in 2003

At $422 million, 2003 shipments of industrial laser equipment and systems for North America and for export stayed level with 2002 shipments, according to the Laser Systems Product Group of the Association for Manufacturing Technology. Shipments to North America by 43 companies reporting to the group totaled $316.1 million, with exports amounting to $105.9 million. Cutting applications were the largest source of industrial laser activity in 2003, accounting for nearly 55 percent of all shipments.

AK Steel Raising Prices for Stainless Alloys

The AP reported last Friday (March 12) that AK Steel Corp., Middletown, OH, will raise prices, for shipments beginning on April 4, by three percent on all 200-, 300- and 400-series stainless-steel sheet, strip and plate products. In making its fourth round of price increases this year, AK cites rising costs of raw materials and energy needed for production. A note: its stock price rose 15 cents, to close at $4.94 per share, on Friday.
