North Star Steel to Close Wire-Rod Plant

North Star Steel, citing a lackluster market for wire rod and steel reinforcement bars, will close its Kingman, AZ, plant by March 17. The plant had begun operations in September 1996. “The market for steel reinforcement bars and wire-rod products has not met our expectations,” said Jim Thompson, North Star president, in announcing the closing. “This was a difficult decision to make, but we could not continue manufacturing product at a significant financial loss to the company.” The shutdown affects 113 workers, who will be offered the opportunity to relocate to other North Star operations.

Shipments of Workholding Equipment off in 2002

U.S. shipments of workholding equipment for metal machining dropped 10.3 percent in 2002 compared to 2001 shipments, according to the Workholding Product Group (WPG) of AMT—The Association For Manufacturing Technology, McLean, VA. The WPG consists of AMT members that product chucks, jaws, collets, vises, fixtures and other workholding equipment. “By all indicators, the machine-tool market in the United States has hit bottom and the pickup in orders in December holds promise for a turnaround during the second quarter of 2003,” says Richard Spooner, WPG chairman and president and CEO of PowerHold Inc.
