Shipments of Workholding Equipment off in 2002

U.S. shipments of workholding equipment for metal machining dropped 10.3 percent in 2002 compared to 2001 shipments, according to the Workholding Product Group (WPG) of AMT—The Association For Manufacturing Technology, McLean, VA. The WPG consists of AMT members that product chucks, jaws, collets, vises, fixtures and other workholding equipment. “By all indicators, the machine-tool market in the United States has hit bottom and the pickup in orders in December holds promise for a turnaround during the second quarter of 2003,” says Richard Spooner, WPG chairman and president and CEO of PowerHold Inc.

Agie Ltd. Hosts Three-Day Inaugural Event

To celebrate the opening of its new U.S. headquarters in Lincolnshire, IL, Agie Ltd. held a three-day open house March 4-6 for the metalworking press (attended by MetalForming staff), its sales network of machine-tool distributors and VIP customers and business partners. The firm showed its newest products for wire and die-sinking EDM in the facility’s 2300-sq.-ft. demonstration area. It has another 3500 sq. ft. of office space, 8000 sq. ft. of warehouse space and 1750 sq. ft. available for future expansion. The firm is online at www.agieus.com.

China Led the World
in Machine-Tool Consumption in 2002

In one year, the Peoples Republic of China moved from number four to the top lost in consumption of machine tools, according to the 2003 World Machine Tool Output & Consumption Survey from Gardner Publications. Chinese consumption gained 20 percent over 2001 in a year when most nations saw annual purchases drop, including a decrease of 36 percent in the United States. Overall global production of machine tools dropped 14 percent in 2002 compared to 2001—top producer is Germany, followed by Japan, Italy, China and the United States.
