Thursday, February 9, 2006
North American robotics companies posted a record for new orders in 2005, surpassing the previous high set in 1999, according to new statistics released by the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), Ann Arbor, MI. A total of 18,228 robots valued at $1.16 billion were ordered by North American manufacturing companies in 2005, an increase of 23 percent in units and 17 percent in dollars over 2004 totals. When orders placed by companies outside of North America are included, final totals are 19,445 robots valued at $1.22 billion, gains of 21 percent in units and 15 percent in dollars over 2004. Automotive manufacturers, the largest users of robots, increased their orders by 49 percent in 2005; and, orders jumped 14 percent to automotive-component suppliers. Combined, these two sectors accounted for 70 percent of new-robot orders in 2005. RIA estimates that 158,000 robots are now installed in American manufacturing operations, placing the United States second to Japan in robot usage.
