Siemens to Buy UGS Corp.

Siemens is laying out $3.5 billion to buy UGS Corp., Plano, TX, a provider of product-lifecycle-management software. UGS activities will be assigned to the Siemens Automation and Drives Group (A&D). UGS and A&D began their business relationship in 2003 with joint projects addressing digital manufacturing technology. With the acquisition, A&D will become, according to Siemens officials, the first supplier for manufacturing industries to provide an end-to-end software and hardware portfolio encompassing the complete lifecycle of products and product facilities. Siemens did not provide a date for when the deal expected to close.
Robot Safety Conference Slated for March in Toronto

The Robotic Industries Association and the Canadian Standards Association are cosponsoring the North American Robot Safety Conference, to be held in Toronto March 26-28. The fifth-annual safety event encompasses three days of training via a conference, workshops and tabletop trade fair.

Plexus Systems a Finalist for Business-Software Award

Plexus Systems, Auburn Hills, MI, has been selected as a finalist in the Software & Information Industry Association’s 22nd Annual CODiE Awards. The company’s Plexus Online manufacturing-management software is being considered in the Best Business Process Automation Solution category. Plexus Online was chosen from more than 1200 nominations by a panel of more than 200 reviewers. The final winners will be announced on April 17.
