Imports of Stainless-Steel Sheet Way Off in 2007

Statistical data issued by The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) shows that imports of stainless-steel strip and sheet totaled 421,510 tons in 2007, an 18.2 percent drop from 2006, while U.S. consumption of stainless strip and sheet dropped by 17.5 percent last year. Imports of stainless-steel plate dropped even more in 2007, by 28.6 percent, to 144,638 tons, while U.S. consumption dropped by 6.7 percent.
SSINA (
www.ssina.com) also has data for other stainless-steel products—bar, rod and wire—as well as for alloy tool steel and electrical steel. Tool-steel imports actually grew, by 2.9 percent, last year, while electrical-steel imports increased by 35.2 percent.
