Robot Orders Drop 30 Percent Through September

New orders to North American robotics companies have dropped by 30 percent in the first nine months of 2001, according to the Robotics Industries Association (RIA). Through September, manufacturers received new orders of 7636 robots valued at $556.9 million, a decline of 30 percent in units and 37 percent in dollars as compared to the same period in 2000, show RIA statistics. Shipments through the first nine months of 2001 totaled 8825 robots valued at $688.1 million, a decline of 19 percent in units and 10 percent in dollars as compared to last year. RIA estimates that U.S. factories employ 116,000 robots, second only to Japan.

Pro-Eco to Supply Pickling Line to Cargill Steel

Cargill Steel has placed an order with Pro-Eco Ltd., Oakville, Ontario, Canada, for modernization of a Cargill push-pull pickling line in Nashville, TN. New machinery such as a recoiler, roll-type oiler and a Nelson Steel spray-type rinse system will allow Cargill to process material from 0.05 to 0.5 in. on coils as wide as 72 in. and weighing as much as 80,000 lb. Pro-Eco designs and builds strip-metal-processing units for ferrous and nonferrous materials.

Johnson Controls, builder of automotive interiors, recently held its Supplier Performance Awards ceremony in Grand Rapids, MI, presenting 39 of its suppliers with awards for excellent performance.
