Two More Toyota Plants Coming Ashore

A Japanese newspaper recently reported that Toyota Motor Corp. plans to build two more assembly plants in North America toward the end of the decade. The firm is considering building a plant in the Midwest to assemble Yaris compact cars, beginning in 2009 and with a capacity of 200,000 units. It’s also going to build a sport-utility-assembly plant, by 2010. Final location decisions for the two plants should be announced by year’s end.

Prima Expands its Laser
Manufacturing and Technology Center

Prima North America, Inc. recently completed a 20,000-sq.-ft. expansion of its manufacturing and technology center in Chicopee, MA, also the site of its headquarters. The expansion, which brings the total space at the facility to 88,000 sq. ft., will be used for manufacturing CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers, as well as for expanded service operations and for demonstrations of its laser-cutting equipment. Global Tailored-Blank Providers Unite

Arcelor Mittal and Noble International Ltd., Warren, MI, North America's largest producer of laser-welded steel products, have agreed to combine their laser-welded tailored-blank businesses. As a result, Arcelor Mittal will become the largest stockholder of Noble. Arcelor Mittal’s tailored-blank business, TBA, is a leading European manufacturer of tailored blanks, and includes nine plants in Europe, one in the United States and a joint venture in China. Noble ( operates 12 production facilities in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia.
