One Helluva Year for Robotics Companies

The Robotic Industries Association, Ann Arbor, MI, reports that North American robotics companies are enjoying one of their best years ever, with orders up 41 percent year-over-year (YOY) through September. Automotive OEMs and their component suppliers have accounted for 53 percent of new orders in 2011, and sales to this segment are up 56 percent YOY. Particularly noteworthy: Orders of robots and robotic systems by automotive Tier suppliers are up 84 percent. More at

BMW Invests in Stamping Process-Planning Software

BMW.s Cost Engineering Group in Munich, Germany, will soon upgrade its ability to determine optimum process layouts by investing in Formingsuite Process Planner software from Forming Technologies Inc. (FTI), Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The FTI software will help BMW engineers create process plans and predict the number of operations, and then calculate die load, press size, tonnage and energy. It also enables die costing as well as calculation of severity indexes to reflect the complexity of operations for progressive and transfer dies. Learn more at

Prima Power Laserdyne, Champlin, MN, appointed Allan Callander market sales manager, as part of the company’s expansion of its laser-systems business to include industries such as medical devices, electronics and precision mechanical components. He’ll be tasked with growing sales of the Laserdyne 430 multi-axis laser-cutting, welding and drilling system;

Tella Tool & Manufacturing Co., a supplier of precision metal stampings, assemblies, fabricated-metal products and machined components, appointed Rich Wilke quality manager, and Bob Mikl project manager at its facility in Lombard, IL;

Abtex Corp., Victor, NY, hired Larry Johnson to manage inside sales and marketing. The firm manufactures abrasive-filament brushes and automated machines for deburring and finishing of metal parts;

Cincinnati Inc., Cincinnati, OH, added Kent Dixon as senior sales engineer for the state of Texas. The firm manufactures laser-cutting systems and automatic load/unload equipment, as well as press brakes and tooling, shears and conveyor systems;
