Newcomb Spring Corp., Decatur, GA, has supplied Lockheed Martin with specially designed springs for mission-critical applications on the NASA Juno mission, launched August 5, 2011 to explore Jupiter. Newcomb also helped Lockheed Martin with spring design, including determining necessary tolerances. Newcomb supplied 60 springs charged with deploying the craft’s solar array, as well as springs helping to keep doors latched and allowing the deployment of the craft’s arms while in orbit. Jervis B. Webb Earns ISO 14001 Registration

Material-handling equipment provider Jervis B. Webb Co., Farmington Hills, MI, has achieved ISO 14001:2004 certification for f its North American plants in Harbor Springs and Boyne City, MI, and its corporate headquarters. The standard requires companies to continually improve their environmental performance and implement a systematic approach to setting and achieving environmental targets and objectives. As part of its efforts to comply to ISO 14001, Jervis B. Webb initiated recycling programs to minimize waste. To date, its two manufacturing plants have recycled more than 1000 lb. of plastic shrink-wrap. The facilities also have transitioned from metal-halide lights to fluorescent lighting, and have installed sensors to automatically turn lights off in inactive areas. More at

CAD/CAM Companies Vero and Planit Merge

Vero Software, a provider of CAD/CAM/CAE software for the development of stamping dies and injection molds, has merged with Planit Holdings, a developer of CAD/CAM software for the production engineering and metal-fabrication sectors. Planit’s brands include Edgecam, Alphacam and Radan; Vero brands include Visi, Peps and Smirt. The merger is funded by Battery Ventures, Boston, MA.
