Lincoln Electric to Acquire Hyundai Welding

Hyundai Welding, the leading welding-consumables manufacturer in South Korea and a major supplier to other Asian markets, will soon be acquired by Lincoln Electric Holdings, Inc., Cleveland, OH. The deal should close during the 2002 fourth quarter. The acquisition furthers Lincoln's global growth plan, fitting with its recent acquisitions in Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Die Imports Up 21.9 Percent Through July

Japan, Canada and Germany account for 86.6 percent of stamping dies imported by U.S. companies for use in the United States, according to statistics from the U.S. government. Comparing import data for the first seven months of 2002 compared to year-earlier statistics, Japan’s market share for imported dies dropped from 65.0 percent in 2001 to 55.8 percent this year. German die imports have nearly doubled, from a 3.9 percent market share in 2001 to 6.9 percent this year; Canada’s market share is up from 19.5 percent last year to 23.9 percent this year. What about Korea? Its imports are up over 400 percent, but market share still is minimal, 1.8 percent. Overall, die imports to the United States have increased by 21.9 percent from 2001 to 2002.
