World Steel Demand Up, and Still Climbing

The World Steel Association (worldsteel), out of Brussels, Belgium, has forecast an increase of 6.5 percent in global steel use in 2011 compared to 2010, and forecasts additional growth of 5.4 percent in 2012. In a press release, the worldsteel Economics Committee says: “Our current forecast for 2012 assumes that developing economies continue to drive global growth and the policy response to the European sovereign debt crisis prevents increased volatility in the equity and financial markets….Our forecast should be considered as cautiously optimistic.” Among the committee’s predictions: Steel use in 2012 will rise by 6 percent in China, 7.9 percent in India, 5.2 percent in the United States and 9.8 percent in Central and South America. Calling All Speakers to IMTS 2012

The official invitation to speak at the IMTS 2012 Conference, scheduled for September 10-14 in Chicago, IL, has gone out. The conference encompasses five tracks—Materials, Quality/Metrology, Manufacturing Technology (cutting, grinding, etc.), Alternative Manufacturing Processes (waterjet, EDM, laser, etc.), and Plant Operations. Sessions are 55 min. long. To answer the Call for Speakers, submit an abstract to Tom Grasson, editorial director at GIE Media, by November 21, 2011;

Burghardt + Schmidt GmbH, Remchingen, Germany, has formed a U.S. subsidiary (Burghardt and Schmidt, Inc.) in Chesterton, IN, and appointed Peter Swenson sales director for the U.S. and Canadian markets. The firm manufactures precision coil-processing equipment for slitting and leveling, including cut-to-length lines, stretch-bend-level lines and oscillate-wound slitting lines;
