Blogging on the Gulf Crisis, Teamwork in the Pressroom, etc.
The new website of the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) continues to evolve, most recently with the launch of several social-media outlets including a bevy of Twitter accounts and a Facebook page. Also new is the PMA blog, featuring four industry bloggers: PMA President Bill Gaskin; PMA Educational Foundation Educational Director Dave Sansone; 2010 PMA Chair Gretchen Zierick (President of Zierick Mfg. Corp.); and yours truly, Brad Kuvin, Editor of MetalForming magazine.

Several blogs already have been posted, so check in often and add your comments. My most recent blog addresses teamwork in the pressroom. Specifically: Some associates may only be concerned with their own work and not with how their performance might affect the performance of their coworkers, to make their jobs easier. Ultimately, to truly optimize your pressroom efficiency, your workers need to have each other’s back. How’s your company performing? I welcome your comments.

Want to Supply the Medical Industry?
Better Offer a Full Suite of Services

What services are medical OEMs asking for most, and why are they so popular? This question and numerous others are asked and answered in a recent article appearing online at the website of Medical Product Outsourcing (MPO). The magazine’s editors spoke to nearly a dozen industry experts on trends related to contract manufacturing for the medical industry.

A couple of key quotes from the MPO article:

    • "Capital dollars are now being allocated to a new series of next-generation (medical) products. Medical companies are looking for contract manufacturing companies that are vertically integrated and can handle components, subassemblies or full product."

    • "The consolidation of companies will result in more outsourcing opportunities. Internal resources are limited and focused, and the opportunity to move projects along needs to be picked up by outsourcing companies."

When asked about the services customers ask about most, responses include:

    • Proof of concept;

    • Reliability and risk management; and

    • Design for manufacturing and product validation.

U.S. and China Running Neck and Neck
Only $0.1 trillion separates the United States ($1.7 trillion) and China ($1.6 trillion) in terms of the value of goods produced by each nation’s factories in 2009, according to economic research firm IHS Global Insight. And, according to a CNNMoney.com article, that gap may quickly disappear as China implements its recently announced plans to let the yuan rise in value versus the dollar.

"China’s manufacturing sector is growing at a much faster clip than in the U.S.," says the article, rising nearly 17 percent in May 2010 compared to May 2009; output from U.S. factories climbed 8 percent in May year over year.

    In the June issue:

Modular, Flexible Conveyors—Sustainability and Total Cost of Ownership
Cellular manufacturing and requirements for custom packaging to support just-in-time production by OEMs are just two forces acting on suppliers. Careful conveyor selection can counter those forces and lead to more efficient part handling and packaging.

    Recreating History with Modern Technology
Variations on a racecar builder’s obsession with weld quality.
