Loaded with state-of-the-art instrumentation for microscopic, chemical and mechanical analysis of metals and other materials, the new 1800-sq.-ft. materials-research laboratory is open for business at the Fisher-Barton Specialty Products division in Watertown, WI. The $2 million lab will support all seven of the company’s independent subsidiaries that manufacture high-value components for the agricultural, outdoor-power, medical-device, solar-power and other industries. Among the laboratory’s capabilities: scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry for high-magnification imaging and elemental and chemical characterization; x-ray fluorescence and diffraction for analyzing complex, unknown bulk samples and identifying the elements and crystallographic structure of samples; and drop-weight impact testing.
