Dr. John Lewandowski, professor,
Case Western Reserve University

Dr. Lewandowski will be presenting a survey of additive manufacturing with a focus on commercially available metal systems. The presentation includes both the potential and existing constraints.

A short overview of the field of additive will be provided with the intent of contrasting the requirements and equipment associated with the production of polymer parts from direct fabrication of metals & alloys.  The bulk of the presentation will focus on metal part production, including both ferrous and non-ferrous systems.  The use of laser and electron-beam fusion of powders will be compared and contrasted to ink-jet printing of binders.  Commercial processes will be outlined and available engineering control over geometry and microstructure (thus material properties) will be described.  The pace of recent advancements outlined, and some comments on emerging opportunities will be offered.

Dr. Lewandowski heads the CWRU Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Reliability Center, which provides advanced manufacturing and mechanical expertise to the medical, industrial, government laboratory and other communities.
