High-Tech Lab Adds Linear-Motion Technology to Extend Robot Work Envelopes

Friday, January 1, 2016

Yaskawa Motoman’s Great Lakes Regional Center in Rochester Hills, MI, has added a new TrackMotion Overhead (TMO) from Güdel Inc., Troy, MI, to its laboratory to help provide demonstrations of cutting-edge robotics technology in various material-handling and removal applications. Addition of the TMO has extended the work envelopes of Motoman robots.

“The two companies work closely on projects that require linear motion for robots and this TMO was built during one of these collaborations,” says Joe Campbell, Güdel vice president. One reason for the partnership is Güdel’s willingness to modify its standard products for such projects.

“Yaskawa Motoman and Güdel engineering teams work closely together to create custom rails, and we also use their standard rails,” explains Roger Christian, vice president of marketing and development for Yaskawa Motoman. “The rails provide extended robot reach for applications such as multi-machine load/unload, large-part deburring and arc welding, which is one of our largest industry niches.”
