Die-Maker Case Study Now an Archived Webinar
More than 150 die-shop managers, engineers and technicians logged in to our 1-hr. sponsored webinar a couple of weeks ago to hear how Rezmin Tool & Die slashed its die-production cycle by 25-30 percent and reduced its design and manufacturing costs by 40-50 percent. As a result, it represents an impressive success story of increased competitiveness, particularly with shops in low-cost countries.

If you missed the event, no worries—the entire webinar, including an informative Q & A session during the last 10-15 min., is archived at the website of the webinar sponsor, Cimatron Technologies. And, learn more about Rezmin Tool and Die’s success story in an article appearing in the September issue of MetalForming, due out soon.

It’s Getting Really Expensive to Outsource to China
The costs of overseas shipping containers have increased by 30 percent, from $4000 to $5200 per container, according to a recent New York Times article: Is Manufacturing Coming Back to the U.S.? The article, written by Jack Stack, founder of SRC Holdings, explains well the drain on cash flow that the delay—which can be as much as 225 days—that a company can experience between cash outlay to an offshore manufacturer and when it might receive its goods.

"Suppose you choose to hire a domestic manufacturer (instead)," writes Stack. "Rather than paying up front, you may be able to negotiate terms where you pay your supplier 60 days after you receive your product, which amounts to a 60-day, interest-free loan." Another reason offshoring can be unexpectedly expensive and troubling, says Stack: the need to carry added inventory as stock-out protection.

He wraps up the article by quoting Norman Rodrigues, CEO of Springfield Spring, a manufacturer of springs and clips, who says: "When you begin to add up the cost of freight, aggravation of delays…people in the boardrooms of the big corporations reconsider that decision (to get into China)."

You Can Make Tooling, but Do You Know How to Market and Sell?
If you’re looking for help in getting your marketing message out to prospects, consider attending the Tool & Die Futures Initiative meeting on August 20, 2010, at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, MI. The meeting’s theme: Reshoring and Marketing a Tooling Solution. Featured speakers are Harry Moser, from GF AgieCharmilles, who will address reshoring as a key to a lean supply chain and robust manufacturing; and Daniel Kropchak, principal of sales consulting firm The Sales Matrix, who will address best practices in the marketing of tooling solutions.
