China’s Machine-Tool Consumption Climbs Out of Sight
Chinese factories installed an estimated $15.4 billion worth of machine tools in 2007, a 17 percent boost from 2006 and far and away the biggest investment made by any country in the world, according to the 2008 World Machine Tool Output & Consumption Survey conducted by Gardner Publications, Inc. U.S. consumption, the world’s fourth-largest market, slid by 3 percent last year compared to 2006, to $6.2 billion. Just ahead of the United States in 2007 consumption of machine tools is Japan, at $7.6 billion, off by 3 percent in 2007 (when measured in dollars) and Germany at $7.3 billion.
The world’s leading machine-tool producers: Japan ($14.4 billion in 2007, up 6.5 percent over 2006); Germany ($12.7 billion, up 26 percent) and China ($10 billion, up 43 percent). Totaling production from the 29 countries included in the study, the report finds that 2007 saw $71 billion worth of equipment shipped, a healthy climb of 17.9 percent from 2006 machine-tool shipments.
Complimentary Copies of MES Benchmarking Report Available to Readers of This E-Newsletter
A few weeks ago, readers of this e-newsletter were invited to participate in an online research study conducted by Aberdeen Group on how manufacturers, including metalforming companies, use technology solutions to manage operations across maintenance, production, quality and inventory management. The goal: to improve material utilization, asset utilization, and continuous-improvement-team effectiveness—ultimately reducing manufacturing costs. Well, now Aberdeen offers survey results free of cost, for only a limited time, to readers of this e-newsletter. To view the results from the $399 report, look here.
Register Now to Reserve Your Seat at Great Designs in Steel
The American Iron and Steel Institute has prepared another can’t-miss slate of speakers for its annual Great Designs in Steel Seminar, slated for Wednesday, April 9, in Livonia, MI. Attend some of the seminar’s 35 technical sessions and learn how today’s advanced high-strength steels are being applied to enhance the safety and environmental impact of late-model automobiles.
In addition to the technical sessions, displays available at the seminar will include the 2008 Cadillac CTS, cutaways of a 2008 Chrysler minivan and Chevrolet Malibu, and a 2008 Honda body-in-white.
